The group said Yahya Sinwar is its new leader following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh.
Hamas on Tuesday announced it has picked Yahya Sinwar as its new leader, according to the Associated Press .Sinwar has been widely credited as being the architect behind the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas on Israel that ignited the war in Gaza.The decision comes after the assassination of Hamas' previous top political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed in Tehran last week.
Previously, Sinwar served as Hamas' leader in the Gaza Strip since 2017. Sinwar also chose to remain in Gaza after Haniyeh lived in exile in Qatar for years, according to the AP.However, the AP noted Sinwar has been in hiding since the Oct. 7 attack. During the attack on Israel, 1,200 people were killed and 250 others were taken hostage.
