Gunmen storm a hotel in Pakistan's southwestern port city of Gwadar and are battling security forces as helicopters circle overhead, officials say

Unidentified gunmen stormed a five-star hotel in the southwestern Pakistani port city of Gwadar, the centrepiece of a multi-billion dollar Chinese infrastructure project in the country, a provincial minister said on Saturday.

"Up to four armed men entered the Pearl Continental hotel in Gwadar and opened fire," provincial home minister Ziaullah Langu told AFP news agency by telephone, adding that the "majority" of guests had been evacuated and security forces were engaging the militants. "There is no foreigner staying in the hotel," Aslam Bungalzai, a police officer in the region, told local broadcaster Dawn News, adding that firing between militants and security forces were continuing.

He said an explosion had also been heard, however, there is no immediate report of causalities or the nature of the blast.
