Young Anthony Lawrence can now concentrate on gridiron play
When Anthony Lawrence was told in February that he got the job as head football coach at Grossmont High, he was floating.
The problem being the youngest head coach in the county was there were a few — OK, a lot — of things Anthony Lawrence, the star quarterback and USD assistant coach, never had to deal with. Things like setting up the snack bar, ordering mouthpieces, learning who the returning players were, how to get new helmets.
Then there was Daniel Tolbert, who was a safety on the USD teams where Lawrence had been a three-time All-Conference player. He discovered early-on as a Torero that he and Tolbert thought a lot alike and quickly brought him on board. After being hired, Lawrence quickly made the school weight room the place to be and not just for the linemen. Come spring ball he welcomed around 60 players, only seven of whom had started after the ‘Hillers graduated 23 players.
Lawrence has a big challenge in that Grossmont is coming off back-to-back seasons of 0-10, 4-8 in the tough Hills League. On the plus side, they are in Division III.
