A Montana veterinarian says it's 'concerning' that at least a dozen mammals have been infected in the state amid the latest avian flu outbreak.

The symptoms for rabies and bird flu are clinically the same, clinical veterinary microbiologist Erika Schwarz, who works at the state lab, told the Chronicle.

"This outbreak and how long it’s persisted is unusual," she said."It’s left a lot of scientists just baffled." Jennifer Ramsey, a Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks veterinarian, said mammals being infected is"not something new," but during the last outbreak in 2014 and 2015 wild birds didn’t die, meaning mammals couldn’t eat their carcasses.

"It’s not something new — mammals have been infected with avian influenza viruses in the past," Ramsey told the Chronicle."We just haven’t dealt with it to this extent here before. It’s concerning."Stay up-to-date on the biggest health and wellness news with our weekly recap.

It's a move that’s bound to face legal challenges but also serve as a testing ground for the TikTok-free America that many national lawmakers have envisioned. Montana’s proposal is more sweeping than bans in place in nearly half the states and the U.S. federal government that prohibit TikTok on government devices. The House was scheduled to hold a second hearing vote on the legislation on Thursday. If it’s approved, a final House vote would likely take place Friday, after which the bill would be forwarded to Republican Gov. Greg Gianforte.
