” Abbott, a Republican, has been under pressure from lawmakers, including members of his own party, and some conservative donors to grant a reprieve in the case, which they argue relies on “junk science.” He has only halted one execution in his nearly decade as governor. He has previously said he is reluctant to intervene in death penalty cases that have already worked their way through the judicial system.
