Granger Smith’s Son, River, Saved Two Lives With Organ Donation After Tragic Accident
River’s doctors told Amber that her son had “0% chance of brain recovery,” a moment that shocked her, but confirmed her desire to help others. “His body is perfect, his organs are perfect, we had to do something,” she wrote. “There are so many people waiting for an organ to save their lives.”
More than 113,000 men, women, and children are on the national transplant waiting list as of January 2019, according to the. Just one organ donor can save eight lives—but 20 people die waiting for a transplant each day. For Amber, however, the process wasn’t easy. She detailed how difficult it was to find viable recipients, and how the couple “couldn’t bear to watch his tiny, earthly body be pumped full of all the medicines for 3 or more days while they searched.” Because River was so small, his doctors had to operate to ensure which organs could be used, as they had to be measured “measured physically, not just by X-ray,” Amber explained.
Then, they received a letter—and cried as they read that their “tiny, red-headed hero” was going to save two lives. “I’m so proud to be River’s mama and I’m so grateful to God that he gave him to us for those incredible 3 years,” Amber wrote. “I pray these 2 recipients live healthy, joy filled, full throttle lives just like Riv.
