Inslee’s office estimates one in seven Washington families can now apply for a new tax rebate and pocket hundreds of dollars. However, few have capitalized on it.
The average credit amount disbursed so far is $738.
Single mother and pet sitter Joelle Craft is among the 150,000 households who have applied. She’s expecting to take home $1,200. “We live in Seattle and with the rising prices of food and rent it’s been really hard to cover expenses,” said Craft. However, not everyone is convinced that the rebate is the right solution to help working families. Liv Finne with the Washington Policy Center views the rebate as a mere distraction to more taxes.
“It would be so much better to just reduce taxes across the board,” Finne said. “It’s just a game they’re playing with paper.”
