New York Governor Kathy Hochul shows support for reproductive rights at Planned Parenthood conference in response to mifepristone rulings. Darla Miles has the story.Governor Kathy Hochul is the latest state leader to announce the purchase of abortion pills in response to a recent ruling that would block access to such medication.
A spokesperson from Planned Parenthood of Greater New York said they will continue to deliver on their commitment to care no matter what by offering our patients the full range of abortion options including in clinic procedural abortion and medication abortion. For now, mifepristone remains protected in New York, but that protection is hanging in the balance of these two rulings.
In an interview with CNN, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez declared the ruling "an unprecedented and dramatic erosion of the legitimacy of the court." Massachusetts has purchased enough doses of the drug mifepristone - one of two drugs used in combination to end pregnancies - to last for more than a year, Democratic Gov. Maura Healey said Monday. California has secured an emergency stockpile of up to 2 million pills of misoprostol, the other drug used in abortion medication, Gov. Newsom, also a Democrat, announced.
Adding to the confusion was a second opinion also released on Friday by District Judge Thomas O. Rice, an Obama appointee, directing U.S. authorities not to make any changes that would restrict access to the drug in at least 17 states where Democrats sued in an effort to protect availability.
