Gov. Mike Dunleavy spent much of his news conference Wednesday talking about his education priorities that are reflected in a House education bill, including teacher bonuses, charter schools and increases to the education funding formula.
Gov. Dunleavy touts educational experience while defending his stance on the BSA, teacher bonuses and charter schoolsANCHORAGE, Alaska -
Dunleavy was a public school teacher, principal, superintendent, and school board president in Alaska before becoming governor. “At my school, I’m to the point where I get to choose: Do I heat my school, or do I pay my teachers?” Alaska Association of School Business Officials president Heather Heineke said to lawmakers Monday during a Joint House and Senate Committee meeting.
The governor did not mince words when the topic turned to the Anchorage School District’s nearly $100 million shortfall, saying that there are always funded positions that remain unfilled. “What we want to be able to do is for three years study whether a significant amount of money will make a difference,” Dunleavy said.“We know that bonuses are used with alacrity in the public and private sectors, but they don’t necessarily lead to retention. What does lead to retention is knowing that you have a competitive salary that you can plan for tomorrow with,” Tobin said.
“So there is a tremendous shortage of positions in the state of Alaska. And we’re just simply not competitive with you, the federal government or other states, other local communities, and people are leaving the state of Alaska firefighters, teachers, nurses, and and they are going to other states where they have better retirement packages,” Sen. Bill Wielechowski, D-Anchorage said last week when the bill passed through the Senate.
