A Republican-aligned group is launching a six-figure ad campaign against the newly elected House Speaker Mike Johnson during his first full week on the job, accusing the Republican leader of being a “danger to our democracy” because of his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

The Republican Accountability Project announced the ad campaign on Wednesday targeting Johnson over his role in supporting a lawsuit to overturn President Joe Biden’s win over former President Donald Trump as well as his vote not to certify results in two states. The campaign specifically hits Johnson for continuing those efforts even after the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol, seeking to paint the speaker as a Trump extremist.“Republican Mike Johnson just became Speaker of the House.

“Trump wanted to steal your vote,” it adds. “Speaker Johnson helped him. Today’s GOP: A danger to our democracy.”The 30-second ad targets voters in the five states where Johnson sought to overturn the 2020 election results, including Pennsylvania, Georgia, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Arizona. The ads will air during Fox News prime time throughout the first week of November, including during top shows such as the Ingraham Angle, Jesse Watters Primetime, Hannity, and Gutfeld.

The campaign comes less than one week after Johnson was elected as House speaker, ending a three-week standstill in the lower chamber as Republicans wrestled over who to appoint as their party leader. Since then, Democrats have hit out against vulnerable Republicans who voted for his speakership, hoping to use it as campaign fodder to regain control of the lower chamber next year.
