Alphabet's artificial-intelligence research unit, DeepMind, has predicted a"new wave of scientific discoveries" after unveiling a trove of 200 million free-to-access models of microscopic protein structures.
The firm's researchers, working in partnership with the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, have spent the past year using AlphaFold to expandfrom 1 million protein structures to more than 200 million and making them freely available. "I think that we're at the beginning of a new era of digital biology, where AI and computational methods can help to understand and model important biological processes," Hassabis added.
