Google announced an open-source operating system for Android Auto, which it says will run more key features in cars moving forward.
Google announced a new open-source operating system that it's calling Android Automotive OS for Software-Defined Vehicles, as first reported by WardsAuto.Google said that the new system will standardize the software architecture for automakers, reducing complexity and allowing for more cohesion between systems.
The tech giant said that it is working with automakers and other suppliers so that the system can be integrated seamlessly when it launches later this year. If you've listened to a podcast, any podcast, in the past decade or so, you've probably heard of Squarespace. You can probably even recite the ads, 'Whether it's for your business, your blog, your side hustle. . .' and so on. Squarespace essentially serves as a cookie-cutter website-building platform, and now, Google intends to build a similar service with Android Auto. Google has announced a new open-source version of Android Auto that the company is calling Android Automotive OS for Software Defined Vehicles, or AAOS SDV. The new system is a more powerful version of Android Auto , similar to the new Apple CarPlay Ultra, with the Google version taking things a step further. In cars such as the Volvo EX90 that already run AAOS, the Google-based software controls the infotainment screens, giving passengers access to various applications. The new AAOS SDV software aims to take control of additional features such as seat actuators, climate controls, lighting, cameras, mirrors, vehicle telemetry, and, of course, infotainment. Eser Erdem, a senior engineering manager on the Android Automotive team, described AAOS SDV in an Android Developers blog post as a 'lightweight Android-based operating system incorporating low-level automotive specific frameworks for communications, diagnostics, software updates, and more.'Google said that it is already working with various carmakers, suppliers, silicon platforms, and software vendors to make sure the technology is integrated into the automotive ecosystem when it launches later this year. While the one-size-fits-all approach may reduce complexity and allow automakers to focus on other areas, it could also flatten design and prune uniqueness. For automakers such as Subaru or Nissan that have lagged behind in software, the generic approach may be viewed as a positive thing. For automakers such as Tesla or Rivian that boast impressive internal software, the new AAOS SDV technology will likely be viewed less favorably. ➡️ Skip the lot.
