The closing of a museum is often a good reason to mourn. Museums bring the past to life in tangible, three-dimensional ways that are impossible to grasp through books and technology. When museums shutter, often for lack of funding, too often this portal back in time is lost.

But when a museum’s artifacts are linked to cruel treatment of other human beings, they must be displayed in their proper context. Exhibits must honestly acknowledge the realizations of the present even as they honorably preserve the past.is for the best. Though it has billed itself as equally presenting both the North and South in this painful era of American history, too often it was criticized for leaving visitors feeling they had just spent time in a clubhouse for Confederate enthusiasts.

Now it appears the controversial museum will close for good on Halloween. Officials announced that the building is being sold and artifacts owned by the museum will be sent to a consignor in Gettysburg, Pa. As a private business, the Texas Civil War Museum had every right to exist. But we can love our state while being honest about its past sins. As an ode to a dark era, it’s time for the museum to go..
