Billy Joel and Rod Stewart played Huntington Bank Field in Cleveland, bringing out the old hits, singing a few covers and having fun on a Friday night.
CLEVELAND, Ohio – They’re both in their 70s, fresh off musical residencies, a bank of hits in their respective repertoires. And Friday night, Billy Joel and Rod Stewart had nothing to prove, no record to push. The singers-songwriters-crooners-rockers each played a set before a sold-out crowd of 45,000 fans, Boomer Central but room for others.
He pounded through “Pressure,” raced through “The Entertainer” and teamed with Stewart on the Faces’ classic “Stay With Me” . He hit the high note on “An Innocent Man” and drew a cheer. He brought out four singers to harmonize on “The Innocent Man,” warming up with bits and pieces of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” by The Tokens and “Barbara Ann” by The Beach Boys.
Joel has always creatively popped in bits of other musicians’ work while highlighting his band. Mike DelGuidice sang the operatic Nessun Dorma, segueing beautifully to “Scenes From an Italian Restaurant.” Joel finished a decade-long run at Madison Square Garden and, while he isn’t churning out songs at the pace he used to, he is still a music man at heart. His latest – “Turn the Lights Back On” – is worthy of his catalog, and surprisingly he didn’t play it.
That took him into the upbeat “Love Train,” made famous by the O’Jays of Canton. He pulled some fan help on Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Have You Ever Seen the Rain?” which seemed to stretch his vocals a bit. He belted out his classic “Maggie May,” also challenging his vocals some, though a mournful mandolin helped propel it to a fan favorite.
