The Giants visited the Commanders on Sunday.

The Saquon Barkley-less Giants showed up in Washington on Sunday still seeking an offensive identity. Just two games into the season, they needed to find one quickly, in this hot-seat Year 3 for their new full-time play caller — head coach Brian Daboll.Nabers — this year’s sixth overall draft pick — impressed most of the day. He boosted quarterback Daniel Jones and carried Daboll’s offense. He showed, without question, that he has star potential.

Sunday wasn’t just any loss. It was the crippling sort of defeat that crushes a season, partly because Washington won with seven field goals and zero touchdowns. And remember, the Giants’ handling of Gano looms large coming out of this loss. Despite Gano’s groin injury entering the game, Daboll opted to go with punter Jamie Gillan as his backup kicker. Gano’s absence essentially cost the Giants six points .

The Giants answered with a 70-yard touchdown drive to go up 18-15. Nabers had three catches on that drive for 25 yards, including a 4-yard grab on fourth-and-3 from Washington’s 31. Three snaps later, he drew a 9-yard pass interference flag on third-and-2.The Giants entered halftime up 12-9, having marched 69 yards for a touchdown to close out the half. Nabers was electric on that drive, which lasted just a minute and 42 seconds — three catches for 38 yards, including a 4-yard touchdown.

The Giants faced a must-win situation Sunday, after their disastrous 28-6 home loss to the Vikings in Week 1 — a result that cranked up the heat on Daboll, Schoen, and Jones . None of them could afford an 0-2 start, with the distinct possibility looming that all three could be dumped after 2024.
