Get fit Jog has done away with the longer 2.3 mile distance in hopes of enticing more participants
With the Get Fit Jog distance reduced to 1.2 miles for all the grades, there will be no time mugging for the newspaper photographer like these two girls did one year. The pandemic took away so much of our athletic enjoyment and at the very top of the things that covid stole from us were the third, fourth, fifth and sixth graders leaving the starting line for Get Fit Jog.
Get Fit Jog has launched the high school athletic careers of so many Pasadena ISD youngsters. Who is the most famous Get Fit Jog participant in its four decades? That answer would have been found at the starting line of the 1997 Get Fit Jog. A fifth grader from Turner Elementary School was nervously waiting for the start and his 2.3 mile trek.
In 2014, Hicks, during a spring training game while with the San Francisco Giants, belted a two-run homer off Los Angeles Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw and two-time National League Cy Young Award winner . The curveball that Kershaw attempted to throw past Hicks landed almost 400 feet away. Today, Hicks, who turns 38 this year, is retired from baseball, married and living in Florida. But his mom and dad remain Pasadena residents.
The start and finish have remained the same. The starting line will be to the west of Phillips Field House. Then when the kids reach the north end of the football stadium grounds, they'll turn right for about 60 yards, before turning briefly onto Dabney Drive. Then they reach the residential streets of South and North Palm courts, before sprinting the final yards to inside the football stadium for the finish.
The sixth grade was added in 2008, prompting some four-time champions. In the girls division, Abby Balli did it from 2009 to 2012 and Audrey Serrato from 2012-2015. For the guys, Corey Scott earned the honor from 2005 to 2008 and Angel Reyes from 2015 through 2018.
