As global surface and ocean temperatures continue to rise, scientists examine if dimming the sun, a form of geoengineering, can help prevent further climate change.

A new study looks at whether the geoengineering approach of dimming the sun could stop Antarctic ice from melting. As Earth’s surface temperatures have been steadily increasing, scientists have been looking for solutions involving both policy recommendations and innovative approaches to the looming environmental crisis.

The researchers behind the study were the first to utilize ice model simulations to demonstrate what effects Solar Radiation Management would actually have in Antarctica. Would it keep the ice sheet from melting? In 2022, the planet’s surface temperature was 1.55 °F warmer than the 20th-century average of 57.0 °F and 1.90˚F warmer than during pre-industrial period . The trend is unmistakable and clearly not going in the right direction.

Earth’s surface temperatures per year, compared to the 20th-century average from 1880–2022, with bars showing cooler-than-average years and red bars showing warmer-than-average years.Dr. Sutter described what it would entail to try geoengineering in real life. It would take a fleet of airplanes at high altitudes, spreading millions of tons of aerosols throughout the stratosphere. And this would have to be done over a very extended period without any interruption.
