The number of gender-affirming surgeries in the U.S. nearly tripled from 2016 to 2019 before declining slightly in 2020, when about 12,800 procedures were performed, according to a new study.

Transgender rights advocates say new laws can do only so much if they aren’t properly implemented and funded, and designed to help the community’s most vulnerable members.“This age group is really not what’s driving the overall increase in gender-affirming surgery that we found,” Wright said., the most common surgeries were breast and chest procedures, with more than 3,000 young people undergoing such operations during the five-year period.

These were likely transgender males — generally post-high school age — having their breasts removed, saidof Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, who specializes in gender-affirming surgery and was not involved in the study. Having breast surgery at that age allows patients to “go to the next phase of their life in a body with which they’re comfortable and is synchronous with their identity,” he said.
