A Gary woman was sentenced to 20 years Friday in a plea deal for her 11-month-old daughter’s death.
Patricia Widner, now 29, signed a plea agreement June 29 admitting to neglect of a dependent resulting in death, court records show. It called for a 20-year sentence.as if she was kicked or punched by an adult, documents show.
Deputy Prosecutor Jacquelyn Altpeter said Friday that Widner was more at fault for the child’s death. She was struggling with substance abuse at the time, had gone into therapy and was “much better” than a few years ago, he said.In court, Widner momentarily appeared to threaten the plea. That doesn’t make any sense, Judge Salvador Vasquez told her. If she is disputing facts in the plea, he would reject it.
