Rochester , N.Y. — Gary Smith , best known for his roles as Rochester children's entertainer "Gary the Happy Pirate " and founder of the
Smith teamed up with Doug Ladd in 1989 to form "Doug & Gary," also known as "The Happy Pirates," quickly achieving local fame. At the height of their run in the early '90s, the duo recorded a holiday special for Channel 13 called "A Doug & Gary Christmas.", Smith continued performing as Gary the Happy Pirate. He also continued his mission by founding the Pirate Toy Fund in 1995, collecting toys for kids in need throughout the Rochester area. Since its inception 29 years ago, the charity has gone on to distribute more than 500,000 toys.
“Gary left an incredible impact on this community through his musical talents and his dedication to making children smile,” said Otto Harnischfeger, who succeeded Smith as executive director, in a statement. “He knew how much of a difference even one toy could make in a child’s life. This charity will forever be his legacy.”
