Former LSU Tigers quarterback Garrett Nussmeier had a couple of reasons lead to his fall during the 2026 NFL Draft.
Only Two NFL Teams Still in the Mix for Aaron Rodgers Nussmeier became the 10th quarterback taken in the draft when the Kansas City Chiefs selected him with the No. 249 pick.
Media's Lance Zierlein. He had the opportunity to boost his stock during the 2025 campaign and potentially become a first-round prospect, but struggled in his final season with the Tigers. Nussmeier threw for 1,927 yards, 12 touchdowns and five interceptions in 2025. His last outing came in a 20-9 loss to Alabama on Nov. 8.
Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated suggested a couple of things led to Nussmeier's fall during the draft this weekend. NFL teams were concerned by how he played last season. He also had a cyst found in his back.on X."A cyst was found in his back, and that’s at least part of this. His tape not being great last year is the other obvious factor.
" Nussmeier had a breakout season in 2024 when he threw for 4,052 yards, 29 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. But he could not replicate that success in his fifth season with the Tigers. The Chiefs needed to add help at quarterback this offseason with Patrick Mahomes recovering from a torn ACL and LCL injury that could keep him out in Week 1.
Kansas City brought in veteran quarterback Justin Fields in free agency to battle for the starting job if Mahomes cannot play in Week 1. Nussmeier will compete for a backup role this season. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has a history of developing quarterbacks, and Nussmeier will be a new project for the offense.
