A longtime federal judge and a Supreme Court nominee by former President Barack Obama, Garland took over the Justice Department with goals of restoring its independence from the White House but instead has been faced with some of the mostin recent history. He has repeatedly vowed to follow the facts and the law along the way but has been unable to limit criticisms about how he and the department he runs have gone about the cases.

The White House has also said Republican lawmakers just want the audio to selectively edit it and use it for political purposes. “Justice is no longer blind in America,” committee chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, said. “Today it’s driven by politics. Example No. 1 is President Trump.”
