At least 20 people have been killed and more than 3,000 injured after Israel was able to sabotage and detonate thousands of hand-held communication devices used by Hezbollah fighters inIsrael has not explicitly taken credit for the attacks, though it was quickly viewed as the most likely culprit given its conflict and the elaborate nature of the plot. The United States quickly denied any involvement.
Hezbollah is based in Lebanon and it operates in the southern part of the country, in violation of a United Nations resolution, along the border with Israel. The threat from Hezbollah is primarily to northern Israel, though the group is believed to have the military capabilities to hit targets anywhere in the country if the two declared a full-scale war.
The beeper attacks are the latest operation from one side that threatens to draw both into a full-scale war. In late July, a Hezbollah rocket killed 12 teenagers in Golan Heights, and days later, Israel carried out an audacious strike in Beirut targeting the senior leader, Fuad Shukr, whom officials said was responsible for the deadly strike days earlier.
