Goals by Tyler Boyd and Riqui Puig early in the second half turned a tight match into one that produced an uneventful finish at BMO Stadium. Regardless of the intensity and bragging rights that are endemic to the rivalry, LAFC was effectively motivated not to put its best foot forward – especially knowing that its captain, Carlos Vela, had been injured in the same spot last year during the Galaxy’s 3-1 Open Cup win at Dignity Health Sports Park.
The unique circumstances provided several LAFC2 and homegrown players with opportunities to shine. From the start, they were boosted by first-team attackers Mahala Opoku, Stipe Biuk and Mateusz Bogusz, who each played for an hour. The group created chances, testing Galaxy goalkeeper Jonathan Klinsmann several times, but LAFC was held scoreless for only the third time in 20 matches across all competitions.
