GAF recovers trust in second West Dallas meeting | Opinion
Janie Cisneros, leader of West Dallas neighborhood group Singleton United, tried to voice her concerns to GAF officials on Nov. 30 at the Anita Martinez Recreation Center in Dallas.After an initial community meeting that blew up in its face, the shingle company GAF made serious strides at its second meeting in West Dallas last week.
That’s worth noting for a couple of reasons. First, it signals progress between West Dallas residents and the company. That’s important in itself because the redevelopment of GAF’s property will go a long way toward shaping West Dallas’ post-industrial future. At the most recent meeting, community members were actually able to contribute. Many asked important questions about the plant’s emissions and GAF’s steps forward. Company officials answered every question posed.Tommy Richardson, a GAF representative, told residents that the company will be out of the neighborhood by July 2029. He tried to reassure those in doubt that GAF is committed to the timeline.
Officials presented emissions data from September that shows the company in compliance with its permits. The data shows the plant emitting around 30 tons of sulfur dioxide per year, lower than the 80 tons allowed under their permit.What this means is that GAF could actually amend its permit to emit a lower amount of sulfur dioxide in its 2024 permit request. A member of the crowd suggested GAF should change the permit in 2024. The company would not commit to that lower standard.
