American journalism has historically played a crucial role in holding power accountable. But columnist Leslie Kouba writes that modern media has become too soft and cautious, prioritizing neutrality and ratings over truth and bold reporting.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert McNamara, left, and Gen. Maxwell D. Taylor, center, huddle up with U.S. Ambassador to South Vietnam Henry Cabot Lodge on arrival at Saigon airport, Sept. 24, 1963. The chairman of the joint chiefs of staff and the secretary of defense are a two-man fact-finding committee dispatched by President Kennedy to investigate the situation in that Asian country. At far right is New York Times reporter David Halberstam.

For generations, we’ve relied on the free press to expose and hold government, business and other sectors of society accountable. Thanks to those who dared to share what they witnessed, many harmful things were stopped after being laid open for the public to see.In 1902, Ida Tarbell wrote a series on J.D. Rockefeller and megalithic Standard Oil, which led to its dismantling when the U.S. Supreme Court found it violated the Sherman Antitrust Act.

From 2010 to 2013, a collaboration of many journalists revealed the extent of government infringement on personal privacy following the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Yet the meek news efforts seem committed to warping the definition of fairness by clouding the truth and conflating the facts. . The outlets are responding to the bullying by the displeased before it even occurs. Never is everyone pleased with the reporting. Meanwhile, we The People are left uninformed at best and misled at worst.

Our news industry has lost sight of their job to say it how it is, to point out the differences, to say the facts without influencing adverbs or alarming adjectives. They let a single word of the lead mislead. Positive words summarize negative actions. Alarming speeches are edited into all’s well. Reports and stories are made more palatable to be attractive to more of the audience, because ratings and revenue are vital.
