Frisco trustee tries beefing up anti-critical race theory

Most of the 20 public speakers at the meeting expressed outrage about having the item back on an agenda, especially during Black History Month.

The concept is an academic framework that probes the way policies and laws uphold systemic racism — such as in education, housing or criminal justice. It is decades old and was first a legal analysis and largely confined to academia. Public school leaders across Texas repeatedly insist that critical race theory is not part of K-12 curriculums. Before the vote, Jenna Martin, principal of Frisco’s Roach Middle School, said, “There is fear mongering coming from this board.

“They are scared to let their students decorate their doors for Black History Month because they are scared the board is going to label them as ‘woke,’” she said.Sherasa Thomas, representing the Collin County Branch of the NAACP, said the anti-critical race theory movement sends a message to children of color and LGBT students that they do not belong and creates teacher burnout.

He said critical race theory has mistruths not only about what year the country was founded, but that the idea leads Black people to think they are not on the same level as other races because of what happened in the past. “It talks about us needing to give reparations to the Black community for the all of the evils when there’s no pure Black people anymore,” Lowe said before referring people to take a DNA test fromas proof. “Do I have a problem with them teaching slavery? No I don’t, that’s silly. Do I have a problem with teaching the lynchings? No I don’t. This policy does not stop people from teaching that. What it does is puts a stop in you telling people that you can only go so far because of your race.
