Here's a look at some of the statewide highlights from Friday's Week 2 high school football action.
Helena’s offensive trio of quarterback Carson Acker, running back Jordan Washington and receiver Hunter Hale powered the Huskies.
Antone Ellison booted a 41-yard field goal with 8:24 left in the third quarter for a 10-3 Clay-Chalkville lead. Floyd completed 15-of-23 passes for 323 yards and four touchdowns and ran 12 times for 64 yards and two scores while Loving grabbing four passes with three for touchdowns. Beason threw TD passes of 55 yards to Boogie Harris, 64 yards to Morgan Harris and 43 yards to Jacoby Quates. Harris also scored on a 59-yard run in the second half to tie the game at 35-all.
Quarterback Brock Bradley completed 15-of-24 passes for 141 yards and two scores and three Spain Park running backs combined for 128 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Will Myers led Homewood with 47 yards rushing on six attempts. He completed 4-of-9 passes for 25 yards. Montevallo travels to Moundville to open Region 3 play against Hale County on Friday. Shelby County plays at Holtville in its Region 3 opener.The Class 6A Eagles rallied for 14 unanswered points in the second half to knock off Class 2A No. 10 Aliceville at home on Friday.
Collin Pate had 17 carries for 69 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Jay Fuller got 47 yards on eight attempts and caught a pass for 12 yards. Grissom led 35-0 at the half. The Tigers got touchdowns from CJ Washington and Porter and two from Seth Leebern. Jameer Woodruff also scored on a 2-yard run.Hazel Green’s only score on the night came on Riley Hicks’ one-yard run with only 20 seconds left in the game.– Jimmy LayDax Varnadore threw for 338 yards and four touchdowns as Fort Payne overwhelmed Etowah.Kaden Dubose had four carries for 56 yards and a TD and also caught a 46-yard TD pass.
Meek was led by Deaver with 111 yards on 18 carries but was never able to get the ball in the end zone against the Panther defense.Madison Academy 49, Randolph 20 Three plays later, Tristan Childers scored on a 1-yard run. Jose Arreguin added the PAT for a 7-0 lead. Childers scored his third touchdown of the game with 43 seconds left in the third quarter on a 7-yard run. Arreguin’s extra point made it 48-7.
Braxton Peters and Jalen Fletcher led West Morgan with two touchdowns each. Peters threw for two scores and Fletcher had two touchdown runs. Tiarrius Mosley had two scoring receptions and Jeremy Strong added a run for points. Walker Letson had a punt return touchdown and Colby Jones had a pick-6. Mims connected with Camare Hampton for three of those scores. Oxford also got a touchdown run from Nick Richardson. The Yellow Jacket defense held Huntsville to only a pair of field goals.
Brewer led 7-0 after one quarter following a 4-yard run by Christopher Watson and took a 13-7 second-period advantage on a 19-yard pass from Cason Oden to Austyn Holmes.Sparkman moved to 2-0 with a dominating 65-0 win over Huffman. This game got out of hand fast as the Senators ran out to 58-0 lead at the half and both coaches agreed to play the second half with only four-minute quarters.
Daphne went with Jaylyn Thibodeaux as their starter at quarterback. Last week’s starter, Landon Snow, is no longer with the team, coach Kenny King confirmed this week. Thibodeaux went 0-for-5 before IMG transfer Jamar Malone entered the game. Malone immediately threw a 44-yard completion to John Davis.
Kolton Nero rushed for 271 yards and four touchdowns on 28 carries as Class 7A No. 10 Foley improved to 2-0. Jarrett Daughtry threw three more touchdown passes as Class 5A No. 4 Faith Academy rolled on the road.Ty Goodwill caught a TD pass and had three interceptions and a blocked field goal attempt. Tyrell Dotson scored on a 45-yard TD run and caught three passes for 99 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Teague Broadhead had a pair of TDs and Tait Moore and Caid Lyons had one each. Drew Murphy had three interceptions, including a pick-6. He also had three tackles. Randal Barfoot’s 3-yard touchdown run with less than a minute remaining gave the Gators the lead for good after Cottage Hill had rallied to take a 22-21 lead.
Simmons finished the game with three receptions but had a key second-half drop that could’ve led to a touchdown. Auburn commit J’Marion Burnette rushed for 101 yards and a TD on 20 carries as Andalusia had 227 yards of total offense.Anniston managed just 26 yards passing and 126 rushing for 152 total.Santonious Brown rushed for 181 yards and 2 touchdowns on 15 carries as Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa pulled away.For Pike Road, freshman Cason Meyers was 14-of-21 for 124 yards. Sophomore JaMichael Jones had an 18-yard TD run.
KJ Washington led the defense with seven tackles and three tackles for a loss. Charlie Chappelle had five tackles and two tackles for a loss along with a sack.
