Students are counting down the days until the last day of school. But some are facing serious consequences for the amount of hours they missed in the classroom.

But some kids and their parents are facing serious consequences for the amount of hours they missed in the classroom.
A student is considered truant if they miss 30 or more consecutive hours, 42 or more hours in one month or over 72 hours in a single school year. Stroud says the ownership used to be more on parents, but House Bill 410 passed in 2017 gave the school district more responsibility for ensuring kids attended class.
“At the end of the day, we want children to actually go to school. This was never intended to be punitive even though they have the ability to prosecute those offenses,” Stroud said.
