Odette Pollar says she wants to see the nonprofit promoting sustainable gardening and reducing landfill waste continue in some form.
The Plant Exchange, a mostly free way for Oaklanders to donate unwanted plants and pick up new ones, is winding down operations this month, but there’s still time for gardeners of all skill levels to pick up a succulent or other native plant along with some free advice from fellow green thumbs.
“I wanted to find a way to help neighbors meet each other. And I do love plants,” says Pollar who began the exchange after hanging up her management consulting shingle. “We take all plants from seedlings to trees.” As the exchange grew in popularity, the organization acquired storage space for supplies like tables and signage to put on the events as well as a truck to pick up donated plants. This and other expenses led to the exchange opening a thrift store to sell donated patio furniture, hoses, other gardening items and even kitchen supplies.
“It was somewhat chaotic but fun,” says Holzman, who immediately realized the operation could use some help. She’s been one of the exchange’s 600 loyal volunteers ever since.
