“The post-Trump era of healing can be bipartisan if the Democrats nominate someone with bipartisan character' ThursdayThoughts
George Mason law professor J. W. Verret worked for John McCain’s campaign in 2008, served on Mitt Romney’s economic-policy team in 2012 and was part of Donald Trump’s transition team in 2016. That was before he called for the president’s impeachment. ‘If this were any other year, I’d be working to help re-elect the Republican incumbent, hoping he would stay focused on advancing a solid free-market regulatory policy. This year, my calculus is a bit more complicated.
But what’s the alternative? Four more years of Trump doesn’t sit well with him, either. So Verret is looking for a Democratic candidate to emerge that could ultimately help mend the rift between parties. The first name he brought up: Joe Biden, a choice he says that isn’t at odds with his support of Mitch McConnell and his Republican caucus.
If not Biden, Verret says, the pick needs to be someone with “a record of bipartisanship and of respectful dialogue with Republicans,” such as Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Senator Amy Klobuchar.
