As the former prosecutor for Burlington County who navigated this new system of pretrial procedures on a daily basis, I believe the law works.

recently hosted a panel discussion on bail reform in New Jersey at his Public Policy Institute. The conversation was timely as the state Legislature considers changing his signature bail reform law amid concerns about rising crime, with some officials citing the current law, implemented in 2017, as enabling a substantial increase in car thefts and other crimes during the pandemic era.

As the former prosecutor for Burlington County who navigated this new system of pretrial procedures on a daily basis from 2017 to 2022, I share the opinion that the law works, or at least can work, just fine as it is. As for car thefts, which undeniably have spiked since 2020, we can address that problem without amending the bail reform law.
