Before Colorado School of Mines senior John Matocha was named winner of the Harlon Hill Award on Friday, one person who had no doubt the quarterback would be recognized as NCAA Division II’s College Football Player of the Year was his former high school coach, J.D. Berna.
“We’re in 7-on-7 and were struggling,” Berna recalled. “John was the quarterback for our JV team, and I went over and talked to him. I said, ‘Hey, I’m going to bring you over to this other field and let you get some reps with the big boys .’ He looked at me and said, ‘Coach, I won’t let you down.’ From that point forward, it’s been true. “He was always our hardest worker, and that’s a true tell of somebody. If your best athletes are also your hardest workers, then you’ve got something special.” The national accolades are fitting. Deserving. But Matocha winces whenever conversation turns toward them.
