Vladimir Putin’s former speechwriter warned the arrival of modern Western tanks in Ukraine represented a failure of deterrence that could weaken the president’s position at home.
The Kremlin warned US and German tanks would “burn like all the other ones” and dismissed the decision as “absurd”.
“The main thing is, this is a completely obvious overestimation of the potential [the supply of tanks] would add to the armed forces of Ukraine. Russia’s foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said the German decision confirmed what she said was a “pre-planned war” against Moscow.
