Dr. Derrick Todd, a former chief of clinical rheumatology, is facing rape charges and a class-action lawsuit after allegations of sexual assault surfaced against him. Over 200 former patients claim he performed unnecessary and inappropriate pelvic, breast, testicular, and rectal examinations.
Dr. Derrick Todd is facing serious legal charges stemming from allegations of sexual assault against two patients during medical examinations. The Middlesex County District Attorney announced on Thursday that Todd was indicted on rape charges following incidents that allegedly occurred in December 2022 and June 2023 at Charles River Medical Associates in Framingham, Massachusetts.
One of the alleged victims reported enduring excruciating pain during the examination, even screaming at Todd to stop, but he reportedly continued the procedure. The second patient claimed she had not given Todd consent for the specific examination he performed, but he allegedly proceeded regardless. A judge has ordered Todd to surrender his passport, refrain from contacting the alleged victims, and relinquish all medical licenses. Claims of abuse against Todd date back to 2010 but only surfaced in 2023 after Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital received anonymous complaints. Todd, the former chief of clinical rheumatology at the Boston hospital, resigned after 14 years in 2023 when two other physicians questioned the appropriateness of pelvic exams for his rheumatology patients. Over 200 of Todd's former patients have accused him of performing unnecessary pelvic floor therapy, breast examinations, testicular examinations, and rectal examinations. Attorneys representing 180 of these former patients assert that the two rape charges are just the beginning of Todd's legal troubles. They emphasize that this case is about a doctor abusing his position and taking advantage of patients who placed their trust in him for his own personal sexual gratification.The class-action lawsuit against Todd also names the hospital as a defendant, alleging that it was aware of the abuse but failed to take action to stop it
