The well known area visual artist has refined his craft for decades, since his skateboarding and punk rock days on the East Coast.
In this 2023 image by Alameda-based photographer Lenny Gonzalez, drummer Andrew Cyrille takes a break during a sound check for a performance of Karl Evangelista’s “Bukas” at the Oaktown Jazz Workshop. Gonzalez, an East Coast native who’s lived in Alameda since 2002, is well known on the Bay Area music scene for his photo shoots of performers ranging from the Kronos Quartet to Berkeley jazz drummer Scott Amendola.
A photo shoot for trumpeter and band leader Sarah Wilson at “the Point,” as Gonzalez likes to call the former Navy base, provided one such opportunity for spontaneity. “On a shoot, we start with a setting arranged in advance, and then ideas come to him during the shoot, and it moves in unexpected ways, much like improvisation works in jazz,” says Wilson. “The process is an organic, free-flowing experience. He has such a rare gift and artistry. I love working with him.”
“We had a rope tied to one of the symbols, and there’s a hole in the center, and I had him do some motion with it. And that to me was like saying, ‘Yes, he’s a percussionist, but he’s also just as much a composer and creative person.’ I’m just trying to get across that these people are artists and not just merely instrumentalists.”
