Police say Florida family committed hate crime, nearly beat man to death for ‘making their son gay’

that Inna Makarenko, 44, Yeevhen Makarenko, 43, and their adult sons, Oleh and Vladyslav, were charged last week with attempted murder of a Pompano Beach man under Florida’s “hate crime” law.

The report said that on Aug. 6 the family showed up at the victim’s apartment and forced their way in. The Herald reported that police say they began “punching, kicking and hitting,” him in his face and body. The Herald reported that the victim was “medically intubated for three weeks,” and did not tell police, at first, what happened. But in February, the paper reported, his memory of the incident returned and he pressed charges. The Herald reported that in addition to being blinded — he has reportedly been told he will likely never see again — by the attack, the victim had a concussion, severe bruising and swelling in his brain, multiple fractures in his face and a fractured jaw.
