It’s wise for beachgoers to keep a sharp eye on the sky on days where storms are possible. Storm systems often move from in from the northwest, taking folks by surprise.
) - Lightning is a killer, claiming about 20 lives a year in the US alone, according to the National Weather Service. Here on the gulf coast, we see our share of violent weather and lightning and one of the most dangerous places to get caught in a thunderstorm is on the open beach.
Bowling brought his family and restaurant employees all the way from eastern Kentucky for a beach vacation, but he’s seen what lightning can do and said he’d clear out quickly if lightning threatened the beach. Public safety officials said it’s important to head to your car or get inside a grounded building quickly. The wide-open beach is one of the last places you’d want to be when a storm moves in.
A perfect example was a day in July of 2023 at Cotton Bayou in Orange Beach. The weather went downhill fast, and lifeguards had to work quickly to get folks off the beach. Beachgoers hurriedly tried to gather up all their stuff and head towards the parking lot.
