Florence Pugh plays Princess Irulan in Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part Two, who may end up continuing one of the sci-fi franchise's biggest problems.
Florence Pugh's Dune: Part Two character continues a major franchise problem. Pugh will join the sequel to Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi opus Dune as Princess Irulan, the daughter of Christopher Walken's Emperor Shaddam IV, seen briefly in the trailers while she narrates parts of the action. In the first of Frank Herbert's Dune novels, Irulan doesn't have a lot to do other than stand around as royal ornamentation, though her musings and quotes often precede prominent passages.
Florence Pugh's Dune Character Only Becomes Important In Part 3 Even though she's introduced in Dune: Part Two, Princess Irulan only really becomes important in Herbert's third book Dune Messiah and the narrative begins to fully explore palace life with Paul Atreides. After being married to him for some time and joining the might of their houses, she struggles with feeling inferior to his lover because not only does he seem to care about her more, but she cannot bear him children.
Dune 3 Still Hasn't Been Confirmed Despite the massive success of Dune: Part One and the potential for Dune: Part Two to be a box office juggernaut, Dune 3 has yet to be greenlit. Villeneuve has been steadily world-building to create a prestigious sci-fi franchise despite it not being a sure thing, making a lot of his creative choices precarious.
