Get ready for another Barbie summer: a new documentary is set to tell the story behind the release of the first Black Barbie in 1980. 'Black Barbie: A Documentary' shows the impact of three Black staffers at Mattel on the doll's debut, and how they influenced generations of young Black girls and the Barbie brand as a whole. A first look at the Netflix documentary aired exclusively on TODAY June 4.
” 'Black Barbie,' directed by Lagueria Davis and produced by Shondaland's Shonda Rhimes, tells the story of how Black Barbie dolls went from being introduced as Barbie's friends starting in 1967, to becoming an iconic Barbie herself in 1980. Beulah Mae Mitchell, who worked on the production line at Mattel, shared a photo of herself with Barbie creator Ruth Handler in the clip. “ would say, ‘Do you have any suggestions?’” Mitchell recalled.
