This week will witness a historic milestone as Firefly Aerospace embarks on its inaugural lunar mission. Dubbed the Blue Ghost mission, it aims to successfully deploy a lander on the moon's surface, carrying a suite of NASA scientific experiments. If the landing proves successful, it will mark the second instance of a private company achieving a soft lunar landing, following in the footsteps of Intuitive Machines' Odyssey lander last year. Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost mission is scheduled for launch late Tuesday, January 14th, or early Wednesday, January 15th. It will utilize a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, taking off from Launch Complex 39A at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. It is expected to attempt a soft landing on the lunar surface in early March within the Mare Crisium region. Once settled, the lander will operate its scientific instruments for approximately two weeks, a full lunar day, with the primary objective of capturing images of the lunar sunset. Furthermore, it will investigate the impact of the setting sun on the moon's dusty surface material known as regolith. The Blue Ghost mission comprises a total of 10 payloads, including instruments developed by NASA, the Italian Space Agency, Blue Origin, and various universities and research centers. This diverse payload encompasses a drill designed to enable measurements from several meters beneath the moon's surface, a novel tool for pneumatically collecting regolith samples, experiments exploring the stickiness of regolith (a crucial factor for lunar missions), and a device utilizing electric fields to repel dust and prevent it from adhering to surfaces. The lander itself stands approximately two meters tall and 3.5 meters wide, equipped with four widely spaced legs featuring shock-absorbing feet to ensure a gentle touchdown on the lunar surface, minimizing the risk of damage. The legs are constructed from carbon composites, making them lightweight, and incorporate honeycomb elements to effectively absorb forces during the landing process. For navigation, the lander will employ terrain-relative navigation, a technology similar to that used for Mars landings. This system involves onboard computers capturing images of the surface to identify a safe landing zone and avoid potential hazards like craters or boulders
