A three-alarm fire ripped through a popular Oakland bookstore on Tuesday morning, a tragic loss for the scores of customers who loved to pore over pages and listen to their favorite authors. Oakland Fire Chief Damon Covington said the fire was reported at about 5:30 a.m. at East Bay Booksellers on College Avenue. When firefighters arrived, the store was engulfed in heavy smoke and flame. The owner of the bookstore, Brad Johnson, was devastated when he arrived at the store.
"So, it's certainly not just a Rockridge institution. It is definitely an Oakland icon." Four people were displaced, according to the Oakland Fire Department, and one person suffered minor injuries. The fire department shared video of the inside of the bookstore, which appeared to be severely damaged. Flames were seen racing through shelves of paper books.
