Rochester firefighters cooling off after responding to a house fire on East Ridge Roadm Wednesday, June 19, 2024. Two fires broke out Wednesday within minutes of each other — one mile apart — on one of the hottest days of the year.
The first fire started around 1 p.m. at the Sonic Drive-In on East Ridge Rd. in Irondequoit. Shane Metcalfe, assistant fire chief for the Irondequoit Fire District, said crews were called for a reported grill on fire. Metcalfe added that Irondequoit Ambulance members and the town's supervisor handed out cold bottles of water to crews at that scene.
"When it's extremely cold out, the weather slows us down," said Rochester Fire Battalion Chief David Compton. "And the heat and humidity, especially the humidity, takes the energy out of our guys much quicker. They are sweating so much."
