Alamo Heights High School students will watch the Army launch a rocket they built. Will it work?
From left, Isabel Haspil, Dante Bujanda-Moore and Evan Villanueva, all 18, work on protecting the nose cone of their rocket at Alamo Heights High School, Tuesday, June 13, 2023. The nearly 20-foot rocket will be fired at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico on June 24.Alamo Heights High School students assembled their high-powered rocket to display to family and friends in front of the school Wednesday.
The program is piloted by science teacher Colin Lang, 60, who discovered SystemsGo at a NASA conference. At first, he had to gather the funding himself to pull it off, but eventually Alamo Heights Independent School District lent a hand. The class still relies on contributions from parents and community members.
“It’s kind of my baby. I really love this line cutter,” said Rodriguez, holding up the small metal tube, roughly the length of a pencil. He plans to study aerospace engineering at the University of Texas at Austin in the fall. The class has redesigned the tubes and adjusted the amount of solid fuel, Ojeda said. It would be a feat to reach its 50,000-foot ceiling. Prior classes made it as far as 35,000.
But private companies are active in aerospace development and might be sparking new interest in rocketry and space exploration, Lang said, crediting SpaceX’s recent advancements to its “rapid prototype development” where engineers launch their creation, figure out what broke it, and then do it all again, “iteration after iteration after iteration.”
