After the floats and revelers have gone home for the night, San Antonio tidies up the streets till dawn.
Thirty minutes after the last Fiesta Flambeau floats have passed through downtown, as revelers flock to their cars and prepare for traffic, cleanup crews are just ramping up. A group of 125 employees from San Antonio Public Works will work until the sun comes up to clear the streets of Fiesta debris. The cleanup process can take up to 14 hours. 'That's pretty much all hands on deck,' said Robert Reyna , assistant director of public works.
Workers take these carts to nearby trucks to dump out once they fill up. The agency is also continuing a program that's worked for years: Parade attendees who fill a paper bag with recyclable bottles and cans get a Solid Waste Management medal in return. Helpers are also given a plastic bag to fill with any trash found while searching for recyclables. Crews place full bags on the curb so a truck can pick them up as soon as the parade finishes.
