Five years after Canada legalized the recreational use of cannabis, public health experts are weighing the costs and benefits. In this 2019 photo, a customer sniffs a display sample of marijuana, in a tamper-proof container secured with a cable, sold at a marijuana retail shop in Vancouver, B.C.CLEVELAND, Ohio — A pair of recent studies from Canada are shedding light on the possible harms and benefits of legalized marijuana.
Ohio voters in November will cast ballots for or against a state-wide proposal, Issue 2, which would legalize recreational marijuana if passed.Nearly 30% of Canadian adults say they use cannabis, up from 22% in 2017, said commentary author Benedikt Fischer, an adjunct professor at the Centre for Applied Research in Mental Health & Addiction at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver. However, the commentary did not point to any direct health benefits from legalization of marijuana in Canada.
Two-thirds of active cannabis users in Canada now get their marijuana from legal sources, according to the paper. The province also introduced other restrictions such as not allowing edibles that would appeal to young people, like gummies, candies and chocolate. Positive effects were seen from the restrictions. The JAMA study examined hospitalizations linked to cannabis use in four Canadian provinces, both before and after legalization.
However, data suggests that the commercial period was accompanied by an increase in cannabis hospitalizations, particularly among people aged 25 years and older, the JAMA study’s authors said.
