Senator John Fetterman, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, joined Republican colleagues in supporting the Laken Riley Act, a bill that would empower the Department of Homeland Security to detain illegal migrants involved in theft and allow state attorneys general to sue the federal government if the law is not enforced. The bill, named after Georgia nursing student Laken Riley who was killed by an illegal migrant in 2022, has garnered bipartisan support in the wake of the tragedy.
Sen. John Fetterman , D-Pa., is now a co-sponsor of a Republican-led bill named in honor of Georgia nursing student Laken Riley, his office told The National News Desk Tuesday.
Republicans following Riley's death slammed President Joe Biden’s border policies, claiming the killing was a result of the administration's failure to secure the southern border. Laken Riley’s story is a tragic reminder of what’s at stake when our systems fail to protect people,” his office wrote in a statement. “No family should have to endure the pain of losing a loved one to preventable violence.”
Rep. Mike Collins, R-Ga., who introduced the companion version in the House, thanked the senator for his support via X. The congressman also introduced the bill last year.
