A federal judge on Thursday extended his oversight of Cleveland police reform for two more years.

In his two-page order, the judge said, “It is clear that, while the City has made substantial progress, it has not yet achieved substantial and effective compliance at this time.” Cleveland Law Director Mark Griffin stated in an email that he still intends on asking the judge to enter the two-year probationary period next year. He further stated that with a plannned overhaul of internal police oversight, coupled with declining use-of-force incidents and ongoing police de-escalation training, the city expects “to be able to demonstrate these improvements and that they are permanent.
