As an adult, though, it appears Hale may not have identified as female. Hale’s LinkedIn page, which has since been removed, states that Hale used “he” and “him” pronouns. And a friend of Hale’s, Averianna Patton, whoshortly before the shooting, said Hale signed the message “Aubrey ,” using Hale’s given name along with a traditionally male name.
