Astronomers hunting for the elusive Planet X have broken their own record for spotting the most distant object in the Solar System

.

This artistic rendering shows the distant view from Planet X or Planet Nine back towards the sun. The planet is thought to be gaseous, similar to Uranus and Neptune. Hypothetical lightning lights up the night side.Scott Sheppard, astronomer at the Carnegie Institution for Science, is the leader of the team performing the largest and deepest survey ever attempted of our Solar System’s fringes.

“The orbital similarities shown by many of the known small, distant Solar System bodies was the catalyst for our original assertion that there is a distant, massive planet at several hundred AU shepherding these smaller objects,” Sheppard has said. When announcing the discovery of Farout back in December, the team explained that it would take time to learn much of anything about the object because of how far away it is and the same will hold true of FarFarOut.
